2000 GMC Savana 1500 Cargo Van

281,000 miles – It had 170,000 when I bought it, and most of my miles since then have been on highways, going back & forth from the east coast to the west coast.

Engine is the 8 cylinder Vortec 5.7 L.

MPG is averaging around 16 to 17 highway, 12 city.

Oil has been changed regularly using only 100% synthetic (rated for 15k miles), every 10-12k miles, to keep the engine running smooth.

Has a set of 4 new tires with over 40,000 miles left on the warranty.

Has towing hitch in back.

Last tuneup was 7 years ago and included plugs, wires, timing, distributor, brakes, steering, and some other things.

A mechanic stripped the original screw-in oil pan plug, so I replaced it with a push-in magnetic one (the ‘Eco Plug’), which works great.

ISSUES:

the windshied has a horizontal crack from the passenger side, which goes about half way across

the gas level indicator is not working (from what i’ve read it might just be a loose ground wire, but I don’t know for sure).

the water pump has a slow leak – I’ve been adding about 1 liter of water per week to keep it full.

The latch-handle on the secondary side-door broke off.

The latch-handle on the secondary rear-door also broke off.

The cruise control only works when the headlights are not turned on.

The battery had a 3 year warranty, but is about 3.5 years old, so a new one might be needed soon.

During heavy rain, there is a bit of a leak above the rear doors. I think that the rubber seal needs to be replaced. I’ve just kept some plastic there to divert the water.

The a.c. works, but it is not ice-cold.

During the first 5 minutes in the morning, the front brakes make a clunking noise – – only when you brake during a turn. The noise disappears for the day after that. I had 3 different mechanics check the brakes and each one said everything looks fine. I have no idea why it does this, but they work fine. The front brake pads and wheel bearings were changed about 2 years ago, but not the rear rotor shoes. So, the rear shoes might need to be changed at some point.
