Midnight blue 987 Boxster. Sit in it and you’ll think you’re in a new car. Clean as a pin. The ventilated leather seats show no cracks or worn spots. Perfectly clean throughout. Mirror-like finish. Everything I’ve tried works as it should. (I have not for example found it necessary to try out the lap timer, cool though that may be.)

Working through the 5 speed transmission, the 2.7L, 236hp, engine pushes you back into a seat with a smile on your face. The engine sound is nothing blaring, just the muted roar of power.

So, power everything. A/C blows very cold. Flawless wheels. I added a little gizmo that adds Bluetooth via the premium Bose sound system. That adds two USB ports as well. Fitted Porsche branded mats. Cruise control. Etc. If you don’t know the Boxster, it is a mid-engine car so there are trunks at each end for huge carrying capacity; try that in a Miata.

The bad: not much. Slight delamination of plastic on one tail-light assembly. Slight crack in a turn signal cover. Some bubbling on the driver’s side tinted window film. Pics show all these.

The story: I found this not long ago on a side-of-the-road car lot in another state, priced like a beater. I couldn’t believe it; this thing is a cherry. To reassure you that I’m not flipping a lemon, I had the car checked out at Panzer Performance, Sarasota’s premier mechanics for German cars and exotics. They said that it would need a clutch some time in the future, that’s it. Well, yeah. If you got a stick, you got a clutch. Anyhow the report is in the glove box for you to see. Why am I selling? Have you seen the stock market lately? Anyhow, I’m a poor man who had a few months of glory driving a 987 Porsche Boxster. Now it’s your turn.

(I keep saying “987 Boxster”. That’s because the 987, the second generation of the Boxster, is the culmination, the perfection, of the Boxster ideal. The Boxster was created for everyman, an affordable practical sports car. Later generations keep trying to be mini-911s with a price tag to reflect that The 987 remains one of the most elegantly beautiful vehicles ever created and if I keep typing I’ll take it off the market; gotta let it go.)
