After its years of producing plug-in hybrids, BMW hits Miami streets with an all-new full-EV with mind-bending performance, advanced technology, and deep luxury — a super-comfortable, tech-rich, mid-size SAV.
The BMW nameplate has seen some beautiful models: the X5 is one of the most successful BMW SUV models ever. The X5 is a classic — the distinctive grille design, the sublime handling and the commanding performance, plus, tons of storage space — hey, it’s a Beemer, and it’s the ultimate driving machine.
But coming soon: the ultimate EV driving machine. New from the ground up.
A departure from the past, with technology from the future
Not unlike the Ford Mach E, which clearly turns its back on the classic Mustang design, the BMW iX is a significant departure for the folks at Bavarian Motor Works. The iX is the next-generation of the brand and long-time Beemer lovers may not fully recognize their beloved brand. But — and this is big — their minds will be blown by the superior technology, brilliant design and exhilarating performance. BMW has been slightly tardy with their entrance into EV, but it may well be worth the wait.
The BMW iX is quite possibly the most tech-savvy EV of the 2022 class. More on that in a moment. Let’s start on the outside. A more aggressive stance, wider hips and curvy rear bodywork. The iX is slimmer and lower than the legendary X5, with a revolutionary new intelligent “kidney” grille design that’s massive and other-worldly. The huge body-colored bumper is flanked by the iX’s high-intensity, slit-like headlights.
Behind that nose are two electric motors providing full-time all-wheel drive, along with high-voltage batteries (located beneath the passenger compartment). The carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic body panels help save weight and delivers maximum Horsepower of 516 hp and 0-60 mph happens in a swift 4.4 seconds — torque is head-snapping at 564 lb-ft. Whew! Range is reported to be 300 miles per charge and a 75 mile charge can be done in just 10 minutes of DC charging in public locations. Full recharge requires 11 hours with 240-volt (Level 2) charger (similar to home charging units).
DC fast charging capability will be standard and the iX can recharge from 10 percent to 80 percent in just 35 minutes when hooked up to a 200-kW connection. BMW has partnered with EVgo to provide a network of public charging stations for iX drivers.
BMW’s Intelligent xDrive
The 2022 BMW iX xDrive50 includes standard BMW xDrive, BMW’s intelligent all-wheel drive – an advanced system that delivers enhanced traction, so you can navigate with ease even in adverse weather and road conditions. The electric all-wheel drive system in the BMW iX transmits exactly the right amount of torque to the front and rear wheels in all driving situations.
The cockpit of tomorrow
Okay, this is where the new BMW iX blasts into the stratosphere. We love the latest in their Comfort Access, which senses your arrival using ultra-wideband technology and triggers a choreographed welcome light display, unlocks your doors, and even loads your favorite settings – all without having to take your key out of your pocket.
The iX’s interior design is super-clean, with a slew of high-tech elements including a large curved touchscreen instrument panel and a hexagonal-shaped steering wheel. A large panoramic sunroof featuring electrochromic shading is a luxury feature found on only a few vehicles. Power front seats are heated and feature integrated speakers for the iX’s stereo system. The genuine leather upholstery is firm and comfortable (BMW also offers a textile seat fabric option—dubbed Loft—which uses microfiber cloth).
BMW is using the iX SUV and the i4 sedan as the launchpad for its next-generation infotainment interface, which it calls iDrive 8. The software allows for customization of menus and graphics, as well as a voice-activated assistant. A large 14.9-inch infotainment display combines with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster to create the iX’s tech-forward dashboard design. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across the board, and BMW also offers a Wi-Fi hotspot with a 5G cellular connection. An 18-speaker Harman/Kardon stereo system is standard.
