Munich. The two major winners and crowd favourites
Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy ensured the finale of the BMW PGA
Championship at the Wentworth Club just outside London was an exciting
one last September. Rory McIlroy missed out on forcing a play-off for
victory at one of the most notable golf tournaments in the world by
just a few millimetres on his final putt. His ball refused to drop, so
Lowry won the prestigious title at the flagship event on the DP World
Tour by a single stroke. This year will see a replay of this top-class
duel since both of the stars from Ireland will be competing in the BMW
PGA Championship once again.

“As I said last year, the BMW PGA Championship is a tournament that I
love, and it was right at the top of the list of events that I wanted
to win. I can’t wait to get back to Wentworth as defending champion,”
said Lowry. “It was a memorable week and I’m looking forward to doing
it all again in September.”

However, the 2019 Open winner will have to pull away from a
world-class field – first and foremost this includes the current
number two in the world, Rory McIlroy. The four-time major winner
emerged victorious at the BMW PGA Championship in 2014, and only just
missed out on his second title in 2018 and 2022, when he finished second.

“I always love playing at the BMW PGA Championship, and I’ve had some
great results and performances round the West Course in the past,”
said McIlroy. “I started 2023 with a win in Dubai, and Wentworth is a
place where I would like to add another title.”

The event, with a prize fund of nine million euros, is part of the
Rolex Series, which comprises the five most prestigious golf
tournaments on the DP World Tour. Enthusiastic spectators, world-class
golf, the Pro-Am tournament with a whole host of stars from the worlds
of sport, music and entertainment, the diverse Championship Village,
as well as live concerts at the weekend all make the BMW PGA
Championship a ‘Festival of Golf’ and a unique event for everyone attending.
