Nearly a million Tesla EVs in 2021.
Overall, 2021 was a challenging year for the auto industry. Chip shortages, supply chain disruptions, COVID…
But for Tesla it was a good year…a very good year. The company recently revealed its 2021 sales delivery figures, and once again they outperformed expectations — with the Model Y helping make 2021 another super-growth year. Tesla delivered nearly a million cars in 2021, an increase of over 80% vs. 2020. In a short ten years, Elon Musk and Tesla have swiftly changed the industry and spawned a parade of newly minted all-electric vehicles. Tesla is still the big dog in the EV business, with a meteoric growth in one decade and huge plans for the future. Here’s a quick summary of Tesla’s performance in 2021.
- 2021 Total production: 936,172 (up 82.5% year-over-year)
- Model 3/Y production: 906,032 (up 99% year-over-year)
- Tesla ended 2021 with 308,600 vehicles built, despite supply chain challenges — up from a previous record of 241,300 set in the third quarter of last year, marking its highest number of deliveries in a quarter.
- Despite the supply chain uncertainty that Tesla encountered, the company produced its one-millionth car in March 2020.
- Since 2009, Tesla has produced a total of 1.91 million vehicles.
Tesla was incorporated as an electric vehicle manufacturer in July 2003, and faced significant difficulties when it came to developing technology, producing prototypes, and scaling manufacturing. Elon Musk joined the company as chairman in 2004. Early on, he stated that Tesla had just a 10% chance of success.
Today, Tesla delivers more than 200,000 vehicles each quarter, with plans to ramp up production significantly in the future.
